The digestion of food involves a complex system of organs, hormones and enzymes. Many people have difficulty digesting foods, particularly as they age. Incomplete or partial digestion of foods can lead to uncomfortable side effects.

Betaine HCL Support

Betaine HCL is a mild form of hydrochloric acid and a component of gastric juice that helps support the digestive process, particularly the beginning of protein digestion before food moves to the intestines. It also helps eliminate potential pathogens found in food and beverages. Aging and medications such as antacids can reduce the production and effectiveness of HCL, which may worsen digestive problems due to inefficient digestion of protein and other essential nutrients.

HCL is especially important for the absorption of nutrients including calcium, folic acid, vitamin B12 and iron. Reduced HCL levels may slow the digestive process, causing food to remain in the stomach longer and potentially leading to digestive discomfort.

Pepsin Enzyme Support

Pepsin is an enzyme that begins the process of protein digestion in the stomach. This proteolytic enzyme functions best in a low pH, high-acid environment such as the stomach.

Bromelain Support

Derived from pineapple, bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme that helps break down protein.

Papain Enzyme Support

Derived from papaya, papain provides an array of proteolytic enzymes to support protein digestion.

Ox Bile Extract Support

Ox bile extract helps emulsify fat, preparing it for digestion by fat-digesting enzymes (lipases).

Pancreatin Enzyme Blend

Pancreatin contains amylase (carbohydrate digestion), protease (protein digestion) and lipase (fat digestion). The combination of digestive enzymes in pancreatin has been shown to provide significant support for the digestion and absorption of essential nutrients.

Recommended Use: Take 1-2 capsules with each meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner), or as directed by your healthcare professional. Adjust dosage based on meal size and composition—larger, protein/fat-heavy meals may benefit from 2 capsules.

Usage Guidelines:

  • With Meals: MUST be taken with food—digestive enzymes work on the food you eat, so taking without food is ineffective and may cause discomfort
  • Timing: Take at the beginning of your meal or within the first few bites for optimal digestive support
  • Adjust by Meal: Larger meals or those high in protein/fat may require 2 capsules; lighter meals may only need 1 capsule
  • Consistency: Use with every meal for best results, especially if you have chronic digestive issues

Pro Tips: Superzymes is particularly beneficial for high-protein meals (steak, chicken, fish), fatty meals (fried foods, cream sauces, cheese), large meals, restaurant meals, or foods that typically cause you digestive distress. The betaine HCL in this formula makes it especially helpful for those with low stomach acid (common in people over 50, those taking antacids/PPIs, or with H. pylori infection). Signs of low stomach acid include feeling overly full after meals, bloating, gas, undigested food in stools, and nutrient deficiencies (especially B12, iron, calcium). If you experience a warming sensation in your stomach after taking Superzymes, this may indicate you have adequate stomach acid and should reduce the dose or choose an enzyme formula without betaine HCL. Do not take on an empty stomach. If you have active ulcers or severe GERD, consult your healthcare provider before using products containing betaine HCL. Most people notice reduced bloating, gas, and digestive discomfort within the first few uses.
